Context

Many children spend most of their time indoors, in the city or in front of screens, whereas a connection with nature is an essential element in a child’s development. It tends to foster concentration, self-esteem and creativity. According to research, the lack of connection with our natural environment could be the cause of many illnesses such as hyperactivity and attention disorders. Cantonal authorities, as well as school directors and teachers in Switzerland, have expressed the wish to set up sustainable development programmes, but schools generally do not have the necessary tools to set up such activities.

GreenAction 2015 Partenaires 1 scaled - OneAction

During the 2015 – 2016 school year, OneAction conducted a pilot project with the La Côte International School, in Aubonne, with the aim of promoting various sustainable development actions within the school with a long-term operation. Among other things, the programme enabled students to reduce food waste and develop an educational garden.

Following the success of the pilot project, between 2016 and 2019, OneAction maintained vegetable gardens and conducted several environmental education workshops in 6 other schools in French-speaking Switzerland (Collège de Champittet, École de la Caroline, École Eden, École Moderne, École Moser, Institut Florimont).

The project

Between 2015 and 2019, the GreenAction programme offered schools a project to create educational gardens with various workshops related to the environment and sustainable development on topics such as recycling, biodiversity, the life cycle of fruit and vegetables, and the construction of nesting boxes and insect hotels.

OneAction adapted to the needs of the schools, which decided which aspects of the project they wished to integrate during the year, and provided a specialised advisor. According to the partners’ wishes, the advisor set up and maintained an educational garden by providing the necessary tools for its maintenance, and conducted fun and educational workshops for the pupils.
