My name is Archana Gopalakrishnan and I am a student at the British School in the Netherlands. This year, as part of a project entitled The International Award, I approached OneAction with the hope that I could volunteer with them for a week during the summer of 2012. I met the Director, Mr. Jan Isler, and the Environmental Projects Manager, Ms. Christelle Siohan, many times during that week. I was very impressed by their passion and commitment to selflessly aid people and the environment.
During my internship, I helped with various tasks, ranging from drafting a grant proposal for their project New Tools for New Perspectives to calculating the carbon footprint of OneAction’s trip to South America from Europe. I researched existing tree nurseries in Brazil for their project Keep It Green and drafted a few articles for their website and their newsletter. It was a great opportunity to do a variety of tasks and to learn a lot about different topics, such as the situation with the Belo Monte dam in Brazil and how to preserve the biodiversity of our forests.
I was also very lucky to establish a collaborative effort with OneAction for the upcoming Model United Nations conference (BSNMUN) and for the Global Poverty Awareness Campaign (GPAC) at my school. Their willingness to help a student organisation like ours further demonstrates their dedication to promote their cause to the future generations.
My experience at OneAction was fantastic, and working with innovative and dedicated people was really inspiring. I learnt a lot and enjoyed every single minute of my internship. A huge Thank You to Mr. Isler and Ms. Siohan for making this experience possible.
